L&T Seminar Series: Co-Delivery in Action: Project Management with the University of Cumbria and BAE Systems Early Careers.
Ros Lishman & Johanne Agnola
DetailsRos Lishman, Principal Lecturer in Project Management, IBIL, University of Cumbria BSc (Hons), PgDip, SFHEA Johanne Agnola, National Programmes Curriculum Leader, BAE Systems - Shared Services PGCert, FHEA, Associate CIPD In this session we will be sharing our co-delivery story for the national project management integrated degree apprenticeship programme, which is a collaboration between the University of Cumbria and BAE Systems Early Careers. We will provide insights into the models of co-delivery we have tested, some of the challenges we have faced, as well as the benefits that we have encountered in the last three years. The BSc (Hons) Project Management (BAE Systems PMDA) is a five-year part-time integrated degree apprenticeship programme which is run in partnership with BAE Systems Early Careers. The first cohort of apprentices started in September 2022 with approximately 90 apprentices. We are now teaching four cohorts with 400+ apprentices enrolled on the programme. The apprentices are located nationally in England and clustered around BAE Systems sites and business units, but with Barrow submarines being the largest cohort overall. There is hybrid teaching on the programme, which includes on-campus in-place sessions in Lancaster or Portsmouth and online sessions. The programme is delivered via the Canvas learning management platform, supplied by BAE Systems Early Careers team. Under current contracting arrangements approximately 15% of the 320 credits of the programme (i.e. excluding the End-Point Assessment module) is co-delivered by BAE Systems Early Careers team. Some modules, for example, Academic and Professional Skills (Level 4) and Legal, Ethical & Sustainability Issues (Level 5) have a smaller 20% contribution by the business. Whereas other modules, such as Projects in Action (Level 4) and Projects in Contemporary Organisations (Level 5), have a more significant co-delivery element (80%) from the business. As the programme is evolving and the business needs of BAE Systems is changing, the approach to co-delivery is regularly reviewed and refreshed.
L&T Seminar Series: The Illusion of Educational Choice: Structural Constraints on Male Progression to Higher Education in Cumbria.
Daniel Dutton
DetailsDaniel Dutton, DBA Student and Head of Student Recruitment and Outreach, University of Cumbria This research examines why under-resourced young males in Cumbria continue to have some of the lowest progression rates into Higher Education (HE) nationally. Moving beyond deficit models of “low aspiration,” the study interrogates the structural mechanisms that shape choice and opportunity, from education policy and curriculum design to geography, transport, and multigenerational mobility. By weaving these systemic factors together with lived experience, the project explores how male identity stereotypes, constrained curriculum pathways, and entrenched patterns of social immobility interact to restrict opportunity. The session will share early insights from the pilot study and secondary data analysis, while inviting critical reflections to enhance the research deductions and their implications. Key themes include:
  • The impact of locality on aspiration and perceived horizons
  • The tension between curriculum supply and labour market demand
  • The persistence of the “Level 2 ceiling,” restricting access to advanced pathways
  • How family culture and teacher expectations reproduce intergenerational disadvantage
Through a blend of storytelling and reflective prompts, the presentation considers the balance between structure and agency in educational decision-making. It offers critical insights for those engaged in widening participation, education policy, curriculum reform, and regional social mobility.
